Self-host Supabase

Self-host Supabase means the database runs on a server in your name, not only in the managed dashboard. That can cut a cloud bill. It also means backups, updates and someone to watch it are now yours.

What self-hosting includes

  • The database on a server you control, in an account in your name.
  • The same app talking to that database, not a second copy nobody maintains.
  • Backups, and a restore you have seen work.
  • Updates, and someone who knows when they are due.

It does not include a promise that the bill drops. If the managed bill is the pain and a move is only one option, start with how we reduce a Supabase bill.

Signs people look at this

  • The Supabase bill climbs with use, and you want to know what you would pay on a server you own.
  • You want the database, the backups and the keys in accounts your company controls.
  • You are not sure whether staying put is the calmer choice.

How Start, Check and Care fit

  • Solid Start if the app is young and you want the accounts chosen before customer data arrives.
  • Launch-Ready Check if the app is live and you need to know the records are private before you move them.
  • Care Plan after a move, so updates, backups and the bill still have an owner.

The stay-or-move decision is Own Your Stack. This page explains self-hosting Supabase. That page is the offer, and staying is a normal outcome. A first pass on the app itself is the free self-check.

FAQ

Questions worth answering first

Is self-hosting the same as Own Your Stack?

No. This page is the specific how and why of running Supabase yourself. Own Your Stack is the broader offer: we compare staying on the managed service with moving, and we only move when the numbers say it pays.

Does self-hosting always cost less?

No. The managed service can be the better deal once you count backups, updates and someone to watch the server. We show that comparison before anything moves.

What has to be true before a move?

A backup you have restored in a test, logins in your name, and a plan for updates. We do not call a move done until the restore has been run.
